Aging Baby Boomer population drives mental health need
Centennial Medical Center at Ashland City Opens Geriatric Psychiatry Services Clinic to meet demand
ASHLAND CITY, TN - June 20th, 2005 - As America prepares itself for the oncoming retirement of the "baby boom" generation, it must be aware of the growing need for mental health care for the aging and its ability to provide such services.
In 1990, there were 32 million Americans age 65 and older. In 2040, the number will skyrocket to 70 million. This change will inevitably create a demand for psychologists who are trained in gerontology - the scientific study of the biological, psychological and sociological phenomena associated with old age and aging.
In order to help meet this demand, Centennial Medical Center at Ashland City opened the areas first outpatient geriatric psychiatry services clinic aimed at helping patients and their families deal with this growing health issue. Most patients suffer from anxiety, depression and memory impairment. Anxiety, stress and depression are often brought on by retirement, change in health status, relocating, or caring for loved ones, said Centennial Medical Center at Ashland City Geriatric Psychiatry Services Clinic Director Whitney Simmons. She says the Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic offers diagnostic evaluation, individual, family or marital therapy, and medication management.
